FOOD NARRATIVES FALL 2017

FALL 2017 ENG 110 H4–FOOD NARRATIVES

Prakash Patel: This is the story of why Manchurian is my favorite dish. A scent that is unforgettable, reliving memories which brings me back to India and connects me to my heritage.

Madison Horn: Even though the man in the photo is not biologically my mother’s father, he is her real dad. He keeps our family together and it is like his mashed potatoes are the glue. That man is Da, my grandfather, and I try to tell a story that serves him and his mashed potatoes justice.

Kori Limoges: Here is a small piece of a project that I worked on about a dish that holds a lot of meaning to me. The project required not only some insight on why the dish is my favorite but also how it is made and a picture of it. This is the story of the most amazing spaghetti sauce that has ever been made all thanks to my grandmother. I hope you enjoy.

Alex Kennie: The taste of food can often speak louder than words. Being unable to witness my grandmother cook American Chop Suey for me was heartbreaking, but experiencing my father’s representation of her recipe gave me a deeper appreciation of all that she did to instill family values.

Dan Richardson: Taco Tuesdays is a story about how people not only bond over food, but in the process of making it. It explores the joy that congregating over a dish can bring to People. Making tasty food creates equally palatable memories.

Kyle Getty: This dish is extremely special to not only me, but my entire family. Every special occasion we have, this dish is present, and unfortunately it steals the thunder from all of the other dishes. Each family has their own special dish that brings about memories and closeness of the family. This is ours.

Sherley Francois: These pictures represent my favorite meal, Soup Joumou.  Soup Joumou is a famous Haitian dish. We celebrate our freedom by making eating and sharing this dish every year on January 1st.

Jacob Hickey: This picture of turkey soup represents the diversity of society. We are all different, however when we all come together, we become amazing and incredibly powerful.

Juliette Roy: This excellently written narrative is about my favorite meal. As I ate my dad’s mac and cheese, I finally felt normal and like I belonged. Despite my hardships, I was able to find a sense of normality in the chaos.

Scott Matthews: I will never forget my nights out in New York City with my brother, father, and grandparents. The skyline is something so beautiful, a forest made of concrete and glass, illuminating the night sky. The memories I made with them, both while walking or while eating, will always bring me happiness.

Corryn Lachance: Growing up, my grandmother’s homemade butternut squash was always my favorite dish. The reasons as to why I found it so delicious, however, go deeper than the taste of the dish.

Breana Hogan: This is the story of a delicious meal my family enjoys every couple of weeks, it happens to be my all time favorite meal. No matter what mood I am in I can always go for this meal especially when I am eating it with my big loving family.

Hannah Clifford: Excitement is a feeling many feel around Thanksgiving, with many excited for good food, time with family and time for relaxation. This makes it a good time to be appreciative of the work that is put into the meal, and reflect on what that meal means to ourselves and others.

Sean Walsh: This screenshot represents the overall idea of my favorite food essay because it shows what it was mainly focused on. I wasn’t as much focused on the thanksgiving meal itself, but rather the family aspect and the feelings that came with it. My conclusion summarizes my overall ideas about how the meal means more than what we are eating, and my pictures show a real application from my own life.

Madie Hayes: The introduction of my favorite meal essay and the steps involved in the preparation of meatball soup are pictured. Meatball soup was chosen as my favorite meal due to it’s emotional, cultural and traditional significance to me.
